Ratko Mladic: A Man on the Walk

Oh my God, wonders never cease - it seems that the EU has taken a stand for once in its life, it seems the gloves have finally come off. After yet another deadline to hand over "the most wanted man in Europe" expired, the EU are set to get tough. Before we see what action they are taking, just a quick recap as to who Ratko Mladic is.
  • He was the chief of the Bosnian Serb army responsible for the genocide and ethnic cleansing of thousands of Bosnians Muslims and Croats in the early 90s.
  • His forces killed at least 8000 Muslim men and children at the "UN-protected" enclave of Srebrenica in 1995 "in order to kill, terrorise and demoralise the Bosnian Muslim and Bosnian Croat population".
  • He is responsible for the unlawful confinement, murder, rape and inhumane treatment of the civilian population in Bosnia-Hercegovina. In many instances, women and girls were repeatedly raped. Food rations and medical care in the prisons were inadequate.
  • He is responsible for shelling Sarajevo and of using 284 UN peacekeepers as human shields in May and June 1995, and the destruction of property and places of worship.

Yet, for over a decade, this man, resposible for more deaths than AQ are accused of, has been living opnely in Serbia, visiting public places, eating in expensive restaurants and even attending football matches. He went somewhat into hiding since Milosevic got arrested but hasnt gone into his cave yet, so to speak.

Now, the EU has had enough. So what are they going to do? Economic Sanctions? You got to be kidding me - thats reserved for Muslims who use democracy to elect Islamic parties into power. No, the EU have taken the gloves off and said it will stop talks on closer ties with Serbia if Mladic is not arrested.

I am sure Mr Mladic is shaking in his boots - not so much a man on the run, as a man on the walk.
